Important update: TotalVPN has stopped accepting new subscribers. The functionality of the free version of the VPN is significantly diminished. According to the words of the company’s representatives, there are no plans for making the service available to new subscribers in the future. If you are still interested in this VPN, please check back for further updates on the status of TotalVPN service. We also recommend you check out our SurfsharkVPN review as its the most similar one.

A relative newcomer to the market of VPN providers, TotalVPN has managed to push itself to the top of many lists featuring the top 10 best VPN providers currently available, mainly due to its amazing combination of safety, convenience, and price. Read our TotalVPN review to find out if this provider is the right choice for you.

Interface

To start using TotalVPN, you first need to download their app from the company’s website to your computer. The installation is quick and effortless – all you have to do is click the install button. After you have installed the client, you will find the TotalVPN icon on your desktop. When you open the client, you will be asked to enter your email address and password. If you have forgotten your password, you can easily reset it. Choosing and changing locations is quite straightforward as well, just follow the simple instructions and you’ll be fine.

Performance and Reliability

VPN providers these days can’t really afford to be sloppy or slow because they would be pushed out of business very quickly. The people behind TotalVPN probably know this very well since they have made sure their services run smoothly and that their connections are fast. This VPN works very well for streaming movies or TV shows, listening to music and even opening multiple tabs with different streaming content. The speed did tend to go down a bit during data transfer, though. Bear in mind that a VPN always slows your connection so you can’t expect to have the speed you’d normally have with your ISP without using a VPN.

TotalVPN is very reliable in terms of leaks too. We conducted several tests for the purposes of this TotalVPN review and we’re happy to report zero DNS leaks.

Multi-Platform

TotalVPN works for iPad, iPhone, Mac, Windows, Android, and Android Tablet. Chromebook is coming soon. The Android app is very similar to the Windows one, but it only supports OpenVPN protocol, which is great news for Android users. The app for both iOS and Android is very easy to install and use.

Features

TotalVPN has over 60 servers in more than 30 locations. As they say on their website, they cover six of the seven continents of the world. In other words, there are servers in Australia and New Zealand, South America and Africa, not just in Europe and North America. The actual number of servers may not seem impressive to some users, but the coverage definitely does impress.

TotalVPN allows you to browse and stream anonymously, to hide your IP address, and to protect your data and valuable personal information. This is possible thanks to a nice selection of encryption protocols, including OpenVPN, which is currently considered the best, PPTP, SSTP, L2TP/IPSec and IkeV2.

TotalVPN protects you, your data and your privacy from hackers and intruders on public Wi-Fi hotspots too.

The TotalVPN premium plan does not put a cap on speed and data. This means unlimited bandwidth and the possibility to do pretty much whatever you like online with no restrictions at all.

As for the uptime, TotalVPN guarantees it at 99.99%. A lot of providers say they can assure this kind of uptime, but this one actually delivers.

TotalVPN is supported on all major operating systems and platforms, including even some less common ones. The apps and clients are great, very easy to use and they do not require any particular configuration. Connections are achieved through a single click and even if you decide to customize some of the features, you can do that quickly and easily.

Security and Privacy

TotalVPN offers all major security protocols – there is PPTP, OpenVPN, L2TP/IPSec, IKEv2, and SSTP. This is a pretty impressive protocol suite since all the protocols that are currently considered the gold standard are available to users. You can choose which protocol you want to use depending on the kind of activity you plan to engage in.

As for privacy, it needs to be said that TotalVPN is based (headquartered, but with servers across the globe) in the UK, meaning it has the legal obligation to hand over your data to the authorities if requested. On the bright side, the company does not track your traffic (the number of websites you are visiting, etc.). They record and keep logs of your IP address and data usage, though.

Support

TotalVPN has a very extensive and useful knowledge base and a set of handy guides and tutorials. As for “real person” help, you have two options. You can open an e-mail ticket or contact one of the customer support representatives through live chat available 24/7/365. We tried both options for this TotalVPN review and concluded that they have pretty impressive response times – in our experience, it was around two hours for the ticket and under a minute for the live chat. The staff seems very knowledgeable, patient, and friendly. There is currently no phone support for TotalVPN clients.

TotalVPN offers two plans – a free one (three server locations, limited bandwidth and data transfer, all protocols, one device connection) and an upgraded version called Total Premium. This premium account costs $4.99 per month and includes the choice of servers in over 30 locations, unlimited bandwidth and data transfer, all protocols, three device connections, and premium proxy. The free plan is nice, of course, but consider what you will be getting if you opt for the upgraded plan and you’ll agree that the Total Premium is probably the wiser choice and one that definitely won’t put any great strain on your budget.

There is a 30-day money back guarantee in case you are not satisfied with the service. It’s a risk-free guarantee, meaning you get all of your money back without any questions asked.

I appreciate that you took a simple, how to article by explaining the process step by step and how to build momentum. I have been using TotalVpn over the years and not found any issues so far. TotalVpn has been in the web hosting industry for many years. TotalVpn has cleared all the customers’ issues in the past and improved users expectation. This is the plus point of TotalVpn.

Really great service, never had any problem and working perfectly on my raspberry !
But a recent chat with the support tell me that they don’t accept new customers and renewing existing customers neither.
Later on, they admit to tell me that the company is regretabbly shutting down…

  3. Harry Benson | September 2, 2016

TotalVPN has a very good security suite, which is the number one reason I chose them. Technically, the speed is a bit flaky, but I can live with that.

  4. Hackney Lass | August 12, 2016

I contacted the TotalVPN support, or at least I attempted to. For some reason I was unable to use the online chat so I had to write them an email. It took them several hours to respond. They were nice and all, but I think they should be faster.

TotalVPN is a great VPN company with the excellent service and very good affiliate programme.
