ExpressVPN

Overall it is good when it works. There are sites that cannot be unlocked. My greatest disastisfaction with Express VPN is the speed. I have a 40mbps connection, and it runs at speeds under 10 mbps.So sometimes, the pic quality is not as good as it should be. Except when I connect to the South African server. But It won't allow me to access services elesewhere. That's the biggest negative point of your service!!!

I'm a new user of Express and I have not been impressed since day 1. Not a good VPN for use in China currently. Very few available connections and all very slow to connect. Once connected the speeds are incredibly poor. Whilst this may not be entirely Express's fault they do not seem to be responding as well as other VPN's to the changing restrictions in China. My previous VPN (Astrill) was much more reliable in China. I only switched as Express offered connectivity options for Apple TV and Raspberry PI. No chance to connect either under the current conditions. I'm cancelling my subscription and switching to another VPN before the 30 day trial expires. --

Not working in China anymore!!! Start from March, Expressvpn heavily interfered, took at least 2min to set up the connection if you got lucky. Tried minutes ago, still same. Setup your own VPS is the only way to bypass GFW now. Don't buy any VPN, the same situation applies to NordVPN

As of April 2019, Express barely works in China. Either you cannot connect, takes forever to connect or keeps getting disconnected. You have been warned.
Pure VPN

Not only did this VPN not serve the intended purpose, their customer service is the worst I have dealt with from any tech company in years. They were unhelpful and unwilling to honor their money back guarantee. I had to speak with at least seven representatives over two weeks to get anything resolved.

Brad Park is my name. These guys are awful. Service does not work for netflix. Then I asked for refund. They said they OK. then the next day they said they can't refund due to "merchant limitations". And they offered me a gift card!!!! Don't sign up. The service is crappy and they are dishonest

A shocking product all round. Constant disconnections, unreliable, shows connected but nothing happens, customer service nice but likerobots. Speeds are terrible a lot of the time. Have to manually disconnect all the time. Have asked for a refund but they refuse as I got a promo deal for 5 years, which is not a legitimate reason not to refund. A huge regret going with them, shady sales tactics. Stay clear of them truly. It's a painful experience and your money is gone

Not sure why some users are complaining about PureVPN. It does everything it is supposed to do and you can barely notice that it's even on. Great speeds, great features, great experience.

Winner

ExpressVPN is one of the top VPN services located in the British Virgin Islands and sporting a solid security setup, vast server network, excellent speeds and performance, and impressive geo-spoofing capabilities.

Apps

  • ExpressVPN offers native apps for Windows (RT, XP, Vista, 7/8/10), Android (5.0 and up), Mac (10.6 – 10.14), iOS (10.0 and up), Kindle, Linux (Ubuntu, CentOS, Debian, Fedora, Raspbian (32-bit only), and Arch), and routers. Manual configuration is available on Chromebook, gaming consoles (PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch…), wireless routers, and streaming media (Amazon Fire TV, Roku, Kodi…).
  • PureVPN features native apps for Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, and Linux, as well as browser extensions for Chrome and Firefox. You can also configure the software manually on gaming consoles (PS3/4, Xbox, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii U), Android TV routers (Tomato, DD-WRT, Belkin, Asus, TP-Link, etc.), Chromecast, Roku, Kodi, Amazon Fire TV/Firestick, Apple TV, Raspberry Pi, BoxeeBox, WebOS, Kindle Fire, Blue Ray Players, and other platforms.

Support Type

  • ExpressVPN offers excellent 24/7 customer support, available through live chat, email support, and an excellent knowledgebase.
  • Much like its competitor, PureVPN offers almost all industry-standard types of customer support, including 24/7 email support, live chat, and a comprehensive FAQ and knowledgebase.

IP Type

  • ExpressVPN does not specify the number of IPs on offer since that changes depending on numerous factors. However, the company features thousands of available IPs on any given server. We are talking about shared dynamic IPs, which significantly reduce the chance of your address being traced back to you. ExpressVPN does not offer dedicated or static IP addresses.
  • PureVPN has as many as 300,000 IP addresses available, which is definitely impressive. Every account gets one dedicated IP with the option of joining the shared servers.

Pricing Options

  • ExpressVPN’s monthly plan costs $12.95. Longer subscriptions are generally cheaper, so the 6-month plan is priced at $9.99 per month while the yearly subscription is $8.32 per month. This provider does not offer a free trial or a free limited version, but there is a convenient 30-day money-back guarantee. ExpressVPN accepts Bitcoin.
  • PureVPN’s one-month plan costs $10.95, which is a bit cheaper than ExpressVPN. The 1-year subscription is priced at $5.81 per month and the 2-year plan at $3.33 per month. PureVPN offers a 31-day money-back guarantee. It supports Bitcoin as well.

Protocols

  • ExpressVPN offers all the standard security protocols in use these days, from OpenVPN, which is the safest, to L2TP and PPTP.
  • Much like ExpressVPN, PureVPN offers the full security suite with StealthVPN, L2TP, PPTP, SSTP, IKEv2 and, of course, the golden standard of security protocols, OpenVPN.

Performance & Reliability

  • ExpressVPN has 3,000+ servers located in 90+ countries of the world. It allows up to 5 simultaneous connections and comes with unlimited bandwidth, server switching, and speed. P2P is allowed.
  • PureVPN has 2,000+ servers. However, with 141 countries in its offer, PureVPN’s geographic coverage is definitely better. It also allows up to 5 simultaneous connections. P2P is allowed and you get unlimited speed, server switching, and bandwidth too.

Security & Protection

  • ExpressVPN uses first-party DNS servers and offers security tools such as kill switch and NAT firewall. It provides AES-256 encryption and implements a strict no-logging policy.
  • With first-party DNS servers, kill switch, NAT firewall, Wi-Fi protection, and split tunneling, PureVPN fares a bit better than ExpressVPN when it comes to security. It also has a strict no-logging policy.
