Does Windscribe Keep Logs?

May 13, 2017

Windscribe is a relatively new, yet quite prominent and privacy-conscious VPN provider located in Ontario, Canada. The company is best known for its free VPN service, but there’s much more to it than that.

Today, we will focus on the company’s logging policy to help you determine whether this VPN provider offers the level of privacy and safety you are looking for. So, if you want to know more about the data Windscribe collects from its customers, keep on reading this short blog post.

Windscribe Keep Logs

As we already mentioned, Windscribe is located in Canada, which is not the ideal location for serious VPN users. As we all know, Canada is a member of the Five Eyes surveillance treaty, along with New Zealand, Australia, the US, and the UK. We are also aware that the CSIS, the Canadian equivalent of the NSA, has been usurping citizens’ metadata for more than a decade.

The company tries to compensate for its less-than-ideal location with rock-solid encryption and an impressive security setup, though.

Logging Policy

Windscribe Logs

Windscribe doesn’t use any third-party analytics or tracking services, so your activity on the official website stays with the company and your ISP. Windscribe uses Piwik web analytics platform in order to measure usage on its website. The open-source platform is hosted on the company’s own servers.

As for your personal info, your username and password are only used when you sign up for the service. If you want to be able to recover your password, you can also provide your email, but it’s not mandatory. The company uses third-party payment processors and stores your transaction ID for 30 days. If you choose to pay with Bitcoin, your payment details will be instantly discarded after confirmation.

When you use Windscribe, the company only logs the total amount of bandwidth your account has consumed for that particular month. This data is to reset every single month.

When you’re connected to the server, the company stores the following information: VPN server, OpenVPN username, amount of data transferred during that particular session, and time of connection. The data is discarded 3 minutes after you terminate your session.

At any given time, Windscribe has only your username, password, and email if you chose to provide it. The company doesn’t store any damaging logs, so any user data requests on the part of the government or its agencies would yield absolutely nothing of value.
