Betternet is best known for its free version that allows you to enjoy nearly all the benefits it offers, with the important exception of server switching. It is reliable, offers good speeds, especially with the premium version, keeps zero logs, uses state-of-the-art protocols, and offers military-grade encryption. All of these features make it a rather good choice for users who live in countries whose governments enforce Internet censorship. Over the years, Betternet VPN has often been lauded by users as one of the best free VPNs that work in China. We have decided to find out whether it is still able to bypass China’s censorship and provide unrestricted Internet access to Chinese users.
No Definitive Answer
We are sad to say that during our tests, we were unable to get Betternet to work in China in spite of our best efforts. We had problems connecting when using the free version of the service and switching to the premium version did not help. Betternet’s staff recognizes this problem and offers some advice on how to resolve the issues you may experience, but it did not work for us.
However, we have to note that there are still users who claim that they use Betternet to get past the Great Firewall but stress that it does not work all the time. Therefore, we will not say that Betternet definitely does not work in China, but we are not going to give our recommendation either since it does not seem to be a reliable choice at this point. Instead, we advise you to try it yourself, as you can test it free of charge, so it cannot hurt to give it a go. In the meantime, we will keep on trying to bypass China’s censorship using this service and will report back as soon as we have some good news, so stay tuned for updates.
