Is TorGuard Safe For Torrenting?

October 27, 2016

TorGuard is a renowned VPN provider with a high subscriber count and above-average service. It offers extraordinary server coverage, solid encryption, and plenty of other options users can choose from. Lastly, its prices are rather reasonable and should conform to everyone’s budget.

Our today’s blog post is dedicated to the torrenting possibilities offered by TorGuard.

P2P File Sharing

Unlike all other VPN companies, TorGuard actually encourages P2P traffic. The “Tor” in the title stands for BitTorrent and shouldn’t be interpreted as any affiliation with the Tor Project. So, if torrenting is important to you, TorGuard is definitely one of the best choices out there.

Is TorGuard Safe For Torrenting

You can connect all platforms to TorGuard using OpenVPN protocol, which is always our recommended option. However, it’s only native to Windows and OS X, so you’ll have to install it on iOS, which only comes with IPSec and IKeV2. FYI, IKeV2 is also an excellent choice, but we would steer clear of IPSec. Also, you’ll have to use third-party software to install OpenVPN on Android, which is available for free on Google Play Store. You can use Viscosity to connect via PPTP and L2TP protocols, but we would advise against this.

TorGuard features a “stealth proxy” option available on 5 US and 5 Japanese servers. They’re all connected with an encrypted SOCKS5 tunnel.

TorGuard uses AES-256 cipher with HMAC SHA-256 authentication and RSA-2048 handshake. It also features DHE forward secrecy. The service comes with an auto kill switch.

Torrenting On All Servers

TorGuard doesn’t allow P2P on all of its servers; instead, it has dedicated servers optimized for torrenting. Although this may not be ideal, dedicating some of the servers to P2P is a top-of-the-line decision for catering to torrent users.

You also have a choice of 200 servers equipped with basic proxy service. This is ideal if you’re looking to unblock some geo-restricted services, but it will not provide the same level of security like a VPN. Its servers are optimized for unblocking the said restrictions and sharing P2P data, so it’s not reasonable to expect the same level of security.
